One Good Idea Can Change Everything

Have you ever felt like you just cannot find that one thing that will help you achieve your goals? Felt like everything you have tried should have worked but, for some unexplainable reason, it didn’t work for you?

I know exactly how that feels and it is, candidly, miserable.

When a person feels like they have “missed it” they remain in a constant state of confusion. Every selling email from every Internet marketing guru creates the feeling that what they are selling might be the thing you have been missing and if you don’t buy what they are offering you will miss out and never make it online.

Every sales letter you read on websites becomes a possible lifeboat – the one thing that might be your last chance to make it online and enjoy the lifestyle everyone seems to enjoy … except you.

There is a name for this condition. That name is “information overload”.

Those feelings that you have “missed it” or that the next thing you buy will do the trick are what drive people to buy things they don’t need or can’t use, hoping against hope that this time the “system” will work and they will be set free.

If you feel that way today I want you to know there is good news. Very good news indeed.

I am here to tell you that you have not “missed it”. Your chance at succeeding online has not passed you by.

So how can you clear up the confusion and find the focus that will help you succeed beginning today?

There are two steps you must take to clear up the confusion and begin getting real traction.

STEP 1 – FIND THE RIGHT IDEA FOR YOU

STEP 2 – TAKE IMMEDIATE AND MASSIVE ACTION TO MAKE THAT IDEA HAPPEN

It’s just that simple. And it really works.

Thomas Edison had an idea about a way to bring light into peoples’ home and offices. Edison was willing to try and fail 1000 times before inventing the light bulb. So too must we be willing to try until we succeed. Edison could have quit but he didn’t. He could have moved on to the next invention. The man had one of the most inventive minds ever. You know there were hundreds of ideas he wanted to try. But he stuck with the one thing – his one good idea!

He could easily have reasoned that the world could live without the light bulb, but he didn’t. Almost certainly his friends and family questioned his sanity and did not understand his one good idea.

And we are all better off for his determination.

There are countless examples of people starting with an idea, believing in that idea and then taking the action needed to make that dream come true.

And now it’s your turn.

There is no doubt … the starting point of our success is ideas.

ONE good idea really can change everything!

So the first key is to have an idea, AN AREA OF FOCUS. An idea of what you want to accomplish. An idea of what life would look like if you accomplished this idea.

Some call these ideas goals or dreams or visions. No matter what you call it, your one good idea should inspire you. It should provide the energy you need every day to learn what you need to learn and work as hard as you need to work to not only survive but to thrive!

Your idea, or goal, might be to master the art of email marketing. Great idea! Now let’s take action to make that happen.

Your idea might be to become a top performing affiliate marketer. Great idea! Now it’s time to learn the skills necessary to get the job done.

Your idea might be to make a living working at home by providing services others need. Great idea! There is a huge market for these services. Now let’s find your customers!

There are many ideas of course, and the above examples are only a few of the many ways people can create their own success online.

The beautiful thing about having ONE great idea is the clarity it brings.

Once you know what you want you will no longer be tempted by what “might” work. You will be too busy learning and honing the skills needed to be the best in YOUR chosen field. It will be all too easy to say “no thank you” to the products and promotions that used to distract you and make you second guess your choices.

HOW CAN YOU FIND YOUR IDEA TODAY?

Here’s my surefire method for coming up with what to do next.

Make a list of your three best ideas – list your best idea first.

Draw a line through the bottom two.

Do the first one with all your heart.

Put the list in a drawer. Once you have accomplished your first idea make a new list!

To help clarify my thinking, I always ask myself this question. “If there were one idea I could pass on to my daughter, what would it be?”

Once I answer that one, I go out and do it.

For me the one good idea is to serve my members. I shut down a profitable consulting practice and GAVE that time instead to DOE members when I added free consulting to the Directory of Ezines membership. Why did I do that? I have been asked that many times. The answer is simple.

Helping others succeed is my one good idea.

Now it’s time to take action.

HOW CAN YOU TAKE ACTION NOW THAT YOU HAVE YOUR IDEA?

In the many years I’ve been online I have experienced a range of economic levels. Since I’m not speaking with you personally, and can’t know your level, I’ve listed ideas to help for each stage of success.

I hope they help you.

===> IF YOU HAVE NO MONEY

It is hard to succeed online with no money. No doubt about it. It CAN be done but it takes work, focus and perseverance. So how can you begin to succeed online if you have no money to spend?

If you have no money and some time the best places to start are with article marketing and social media.

Start making connections with others who might become your customers in the near future or might share ideas with you now about how they are progressing in their journey toward success. Visit forums and find out what people need. Listen to social networking conversations and see what people need that they can’t find. And by all means ASK people what they need so you can offer it to them as an affiliate.

You would be surprised how many people make their first affiliate sale by asking the people they already know what they need and then offering them a product that satisfies that need. Everybody wins!

Here are a couple of other ideas.

Introduce the people in your address book to your favorite product.

Ask the people in your address book what they need and can’t find.

Start an ezine about a topic you know well and build a list of subscribers.

Write an ezine article. Offer it to ezine publishers and post it on article directories.

Visit forums about your newly chosen business and learn from others who are on the same path you have chosen.

Can’t write? Team up with a writer and split the profits. They do the writing, you distribute the article and you share profits.

===> IF YOU HAVE SOME MONEY

If you have some money to work with the best thing you can do is leave the free methods behind and start learning about the world of paid advertising. Pay per click and ezine advertising are going to be your friends here.

If you have some money (and by some money I mean about $200) then you are in a position to see fast results. You can expect to spend part of your budget and get clicks to any site you want to promote quickly.

Do some Pay Per Click Advertising.

Buy three low-cost ezine ads.

Start promoting a product that compliments your own products.

===> IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY

If you are among the few who don’t need to make sales right now count yourself blessed. You have the luxury of time. You can make a plan and see it through, knowing you will reap even greater rewards for your patience and thoroughness.

Here are a few ideas that might help you.

Create the product you needed but could not find when starting out. Think about how you got to where you are, write up a book about how you did it, and give it away.

Go viral – hire a writer to write a product you can give away and that can be branded.

Sell resale rights – have a product created and sell resale rights for 5 to 10 times more than the product would sell for alone. Provide buyers with the website, the product and everything they need to get started.

Create a software product. There is no doubt about it, software sells. Hire a programmer to create a PHP script that does something you need done but have not yet found a great product to do. If you are an active marketer then looking at your own unfilled needs is the right place to start looking for ideas about new products.

No matter where you are today, if you take action on the best idea you have now, your situation at this time next month will be different. It will be better. You will begin to make real progress and no longer suffer from information overload. You will have focus and begin looking forward to every day as a new opportunity to move forward with your idea!

And feeling that way is a beautiful thing indeed!

Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that moderate weight loss leads to decreased thickness of your heart muscle, better overall functioning of your heart, and even a healthy thinning of the walls of your carotid artery.

Study participants were put on a low-fat or low-carb diet and asked to do three hours of "moderate" exercise per week. BOTH GROUPS enjoyed similar weight-loss and heart improvements.

So that too is great news for those of you following Diet-to-Go's Traditional Low-Fat, Vegetarian Low-Fat or Low-Carb programs!

The bottom line: Lose a few pounds and you'll see a notable improvement in your heart health!

The study participants on average lost just 9 pounds... YES, a mere 9 pounds.

A time to be thankful

People are funny creatures. We can be greedy and impatient one day, kind and considerate the next.

And always we are unendingly complicated.

Take being thankful for example. Many cultures dedicate a day to thankfulness. In America we have an actual holiday dedicated just to expressing thankfulness.

That’s good I suppose (one day is better than none) but what about Tuesday morning, or the next 12 minutes? Are we thankful then too?

Allow me to share five ways in which I’m thankful, and I’ll bet that you find you are thankful for many of the same things too.

>>> FAITH

I’m not selling anything here and I’m no preacher, but I must say that I am so very thankful for my faith.

Faith has been a constant in my life for almost 30 years. I have hard times and good times and great times and horrible times, just like everyone else.

But in the midst of all of that, I know there is someone greater than me, guiding my steps, and I know He is there … always.

No words of mine can express how good that is, but you can count yourself blessed indeed if you know what I’m talking about.

>>> FREEDOM

You are reading this on a computer connected to the Internet. In contrast, many countries will forever deny their citizens the ability to do what we do everyday – sign on and read email – for fear that truth will set them free.

If you live in America, your Constitution guarantees you life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You have rights. You have the right of free speech, the right to peacefully assemble and to protest.

Students in Tiananmen Square made the ultimate sacrifice on June 4th, 1989 in an attempt to gain for them a right that we in America have enjoyed for over 200 years.

We move freely from state to state with no border guards. We are free to worship as we choose. We have access to our elected officials. If we don’t like something they do, we can vote them out of office.

For these things we should be grateful indeed, because they ensure our continued freedom and ability to determine our own fate.

Are you free today? If so, take time to thank someone who fought for that freedom. Not just on Memorial Day or Veterans Day, but every day.

Nothing in the world can replace the happiness that family brings. My family is probably as weird and wonderful as your own, and sometimes I shake my head in disbelief and say that no one would believe the “crazy uncle Joe” stories if I told them.

But I’m thankful every day for my family, and for the way I was raised. It makes me tremble to think of how different my life as a child was from today’s children, and I’ll be forever thankful for being raised in a place and time where things like innocence and integrity and the truth mattered.

The day I was married was the most life-changing day I could have imagined. Suddenly, two people became one. That she wanted an old shoe like me is a mystery I still can’t figure out, but I’ve long since stopped second-guessing my wife. Certainly she had her reasons.

I’m just glad she didn’t change her mind.

The day I became a dad the world started making more sense than ever before, and I knew in a way that can’t be expressed why I was on this earth.

If you’re a parent, you know too.

No greater privilege exists. No greater stewardship can be granted. No greater joy can be experienced.

If you are part of a family, you can be thankful right now too.

Here’s the good news … you are rich right now.

The sheer fact that you are reading this article means you are better off than 2 billion (yes – that is a “B”) citizens of planet earth who can’t read.

If you know, right now, where your next meal will come from you are better off than 17% of children living in America. The rates for other countries are staggeringly high.

In these things and more, most of us are privileged in ways that others only dream of.

Our world encourages us to be competitive, to win. These are necessary traits if we are to progress. Progress is necessary and good.

Yet the siren song of business, the desire for double digit growth and the constant comparisons of ourselves to others often cause us to forget that we have so much more than we think.

If you ate a meal today, you can be thankful indeed. Many people did not.

The Internet itself is a reason for great thanksgiving. It may seem cliché, but the fact remains that in no other time in the history of the world has it been easier to open your own business and change your circumstances.

For many the Internet is not a convenience, but rather the only way out of desperate circumstances.

A computer programmer in one of the formerly Communist countries of Eastern Europe found his way out of poverty by selling his services cheaply over the Internet.

Providing excellent customer service and thankful for the opportunity itself, the income he earns makes possible such “luxuries” as proper medical care and a steady food supply.

While the average per capita income in his country remains under $1000 U.S. he eclipses that number and is building a future for himself and his extended family.

We in America view Thanksgiving as a one-day event, yet one can guess that it’s Thanksgiving every day in his home.

My knees buckle when I think of how much I have to be thankful for, and no list would be complete without including you.

The honor of working for myself, serving clients and readers for so many years, is more than I ever thought would happen to me.

That’s my list. I’m thankful for it all, and want you to know that includes you.

Now let me encourage you to take just a few minutes right now and make a list of your own. Then tell the people on that list that you are thankful for them today, while you can and while it’s fresh on your mind.

If you are having difficulty finding your blessings, try starting with these simple questions.

* Do you live free today?
* Does someone love you today?
* Have you heard children’s laughter?
* Are you part of a family?

The more you think, the more you will realize that you are blessed indeed. When we harbor the illusion that we can change the future, and allow our thoughts to stay there, we forget the joys of today.

We must not let the speed of the Internet or the constant demands of our business life steal our sense of well-being and appreciation for the people in our lives.

There will be plenty of time for websites and talk of income later. Today is a day for being thankful and counting every blessing twice. Count yours today and every day and you will find that you are rich indeed.

Check Out Bo: He’s Dropped 39 lbs!

When it comes to weight loss, Bo knows dieting. As part of his job as a radio personality, the Louisiana man tried just about every hot diet that hit the market. But now that Bo is off the air and dieting on his own dime, he’s tuned into the best tasting, easiest-to-follow diet he could find – and he’s dropped a super 39 pounds!

--Do your research. Find a diet that is a good fit for YOU. Don’t be lured into a weight loss plan pitched by a celebrity who was paid to follow that particular plan.

--Take it one day at a time. You can quit cigarettes. You can quit drinking. But you can’t quit eating. You need to tweak your relationship with food and stay the course each and every day.

Bo says his weight loss has slowed a bit, but he is okay with that. He is maintaining the 39 pounds he’s lost and weathering a perfect storm of factors that could submarine a man without a plan.

“Once my life gets more settled, I know I will get back on track to a lower weight,” he says.”And I know I’ll do it with Diet-to-Go.”

Using Social Media and Social Networking for Affiliate Marketing

Social media is the hottest sector on the Internet right now and only getting bigger and more powerful. This means, as an affiliate, you need to be actively using social media sites to promote yourself and your websites/blogs. Here are some practical ideas for using Social Media to enhance your affiliate marketing efforts.

Create Your Presence - I always recommend choosing a username that you can use to sign-up on all the best social networking sites. It usually has to be fairly short, ex. mine is experienceads. I use this username on the majority of the social media sites to keep things consistent. Use Username Check to see if your prospective username is available on all the social networks. It’s also a really cool tool to use to get signed up on all the top social networks. Once you get yourself signed-up for the social networks you should look to add friends or followers depending on the type of site it is. By “following” people on Twitter for example, they may follow you back and this is what builds your following. Also, the more content you post out there, the more people will follow you that read your content. You can also create other identities to promote in a particular niche. For example, if you are in the online dating niche, you can create a username like: EvansDatingAdvice and build out a following specifically talking about issues related to dating and singles. I recommend starting out with your main identity and branching out from there. The more identities you have the harder it will be to manage. Also, it’s important to complete your profile on each social networking site with unique content about yourself and what you do.

Join Ping.FM – Ping.fm is probably my favorite social media tool because it allows you to effortlessly update your “status” on all your social networks through one interface (and even through IM). How cool is that! Once you sign up at Ping.fm, they will ask you to enter all your usernames and passwords for your social networking sites. And, it also gives you the links to sign-up for new accounts on all those sites you aren’t on already, so you can get them into Ping.fm. Once you have entered all your usernames and passwords, you can then “ping” out your message, blog post url, site page url, personal update (what you are doing a the moment), and anything else you feel you want to share with the world. You have to keep it short though, usually under 140 charaters. This is known as “micro-blogging.” This is a great way to manage multiple social sites at the same time.

My Favorite Social Networks - I have been using social networks for years, before it was cool to do it. Now that it’s all the rage, it’s interesting to see how people go about connecting with each other and making friends and contacts. Some of my personal favorites for online marketing are: FaceBook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, and of course Twitter. There are many other niche social networking sites you can join to meet like-minded people to connect with and do business or just make friends. You will develop your own list of favorite social networks based on your interests.

Launching your Own Social Network - The Internet has come a long way and the best things are still free. If you want to launch your own social networking site you should check out Ning. Ning is the easiest and fastest way to set-up your very own social network, with tons of great features. It truly is amazing so you should check it out and experiment with it. Social Media/Networking Etiquette - Social media, like anything else online, has the potential to be abused and mis-used. If you go about it the right way you will do well with it, however if you go about it the wrong way you are likely to not get far. Here are some suggested tips to maintain good social media etiquette:

- Don’t just go looking for people on Twitter asking for recommendations and pasting them your affiliate link or saying you have tried something and recommend it when you have not. This is very annoying and not genuine at all. People are usually hip to this and will drop you and not be friends with you. If you are going to respond to a users request for a recommendation on a product or service, make sure you are giving them good information and not just giving them your affiliate link. By providing good merchant or product reviews on your sites or blogs you can share the urls of your posts when it’s appropriate.

- Connect with People Genuinely – It’s always best to connect to people that will be receptive to your connection request. It’s not a contest to see how many people you can connect to, but a way to grow your network with quality connections you can do business with or learn from. Too many people try to build their networks through “open networking” which is not a good idea in my opinion.

- Share Stuff, Don’t Inundate – The whole point of social networking is to share information, links, news, and resources with people. Also, to keep them up-to-date on what you are doing in life. If you are constantly sharing items that are turning people off your network won’t grow and you will lose connections. Take your social networking seriously and it will be a great foundation to build on going forward.

Additional Benefits of Social Media/Networking – One of the biggest benefits of using social media sites are the SEO (search engine optimization) benefits. By announcing messages and sharing links through social sites you can get ranked in the search engines for those particular messages. Site’s like Twitter have excellent Google organic rankings and I frequently see my pings/updates ranking in Google. Also, when your connections and people on the social networks see your updates it creates traffic back to your site. It also causes your connections to comment on your post or update creating more interaction.

Social media and social networking are amazing tools for expanding your affiliate marketing endeavors. The more time and effort you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

Have you seen these resale rights packages that are floating around the Internet?

You know the pitch. It usually goes like this ...

Get 792 eBooks, 312 videos, 843 audio files, 19 pieces of software and access to five powerful membership sites for only ten bucks!!

Usually, there are literally thousands of "special reports" thrown in the deal as well.

Often, it sounds **so** good we can't pass it up. So, we pull out the Visa and spring for the 17 or 27 or 47 bucks.

Sounds great, until you discover that it's practically a full time job to download and organize the stuff, much less actually read it!

So it just sits there, gathering digital dust on your hard drive. Another 47 bucks down the tubes.

If that sounds familiar I have good news for you today. Now there is a way to recover your investment in that resale rights package, and even profit from it as well.

And it's not selling the package to someone else!

These techniques will work for you whether you own a website and sell your own products, publish an ezine, or sell as an affiliate.

1. USE THEM AS TARGETED BONUSES FOR YOUR PRODUCTS

What you do here is find those products within the resale rights package that compliment your site and offer them as a bonus for ordering your product.

You stand out from the crowd and will see an increase in sales because targeted bonuses almost always increase sales.

2. BUNDLE THEM AND SELL THE BUNDLE

What you do here is find every eBook, audio, video, or report having to do with a specific TOPIC and then sell the package as a product to people who want that product.

How do you choose a topic? My advise is to stay with big themes like these.

After you create broad-based packages like this you can then "niche" them down to very specific topics like ...

* Copywriting
* Building your first website
* Raising kids with ADHD

By creating both the broad based and very specific packages you can have more products and appeal to a larger audience.

Advertising your bundles with pay-per-click and ezine advertising works very well since both are so targeted.

Another great way to sell your bundle is to visit forums and make special offers.

If you don't have a product to sell yet this is the fastest and easiest way to create your own product, and is what many of the "how to create a product" courses teach.

3. USE THEM AS UNANNOUNCED GIFTS

People love to be surprised. What you do here is put a note on your website that you are including an "secret bonus" when people buy your product.

Retailers have done this for years and called it a 'grab bag'.

Then add one product a week for about eight weeks to your follow up series for clients.

Your clients will love your generosity and you will see your refund rate drop like a rock. A win-win.

This formerly homeless woman spent hours at the coffee shop sending out resumes. So she started blogging about her adventures in a blog called...

"The Girl's Guide to Homelessness."

She blogged her way OFF living on the Walmart parking lot.

Now she's writing a column on fashion for Elle magazine.

This story should inspire MANY people.

I mean, if a homeless woman living on the Walmart parking lot can get off the streets by blogging, then, you know, maybe it REALLY isn't hopeless for you!

Here's the difference between this lady and so many people:

She took a LOT of action.

Finding herself in a difficult circumstance, she spent hours and hours at a coffee shop with wi-fi sending out resumes.

Then she started blogging about her job interviews.

She took action.

And that's the difference.

She didn't have an ebook on how to get off the parking lot of Wallmart by blogging.

She didn't have a mindmap on how to get a job at Elle magazine writing fasion.

She didn't even own a computer.

Now, learning is totally awesome. And I believe in giving yourself every shortcut you can. But at the end of the day, you gotta get it going -- whether you know what you're doing or not.

Normally, I publish very specific tips, secrets, steps and how to's here.

But I see a small number of people in this business who have a powerless mindset. They think "gurus" are doing it to them and it's all the teacher's fault.

They think it's someone else's fault that they aren't driving a ferrari by now.

They think that it's "too hard" to blog, create products or do video.

Basically, they feel they're powerless to create results in their life and their lack of results are all someone else's fault.

They feel it's someone else's fault they don't have a product to sell yet.

Yeah right.

I mean, come on now, the lady was homeless. Look at what SHE did!

Some people I read about NEED to get a job.

I read where people are going into DEBT trying to learn Internet marketing.

They have it 360 degrees backwards.

You should be getting MORE money in the door than goes out the door pretty much from month one.

You can't CREATE your own product and start selling it too soon.

Even if it's 6 videos on a web page.

Let me give you a MODEL for how to do this:

Look at that. Is there ANY reason you can't create such a simple product YOURSELF?

Look at the sales letter! There's not a lot to it. But it's good. It has a clear USP, a good headline, and proof in the form of testimonials.

The second one has FOUR videos.

LOOK at that site.

Are you telling me there's something about you that is so jacked up YOU can't create FOUR VIDEOS and a very simple sales letter like that with NO graphics?

Please! Jason was freaking painting homes for $10 an hour when he started in this business. He'd never written copy nor created a video or product in his life.

By the way, that second link has brought in quite a bit of change. I dare say more than a lot of people make in a year, if you take into account the upsell.

Here's my point:

A few people told me they didn't have the $499 my new training will cost on Tuesday.

Then get busy and create 4 videos and a sales letter like you see above.

Buy a banner on a forum and stick the link to your sales letter in a sig line and post on some forums every day.

It's not like getting $500 in the door is a massive undertaking.

Your Internet marketing education can and should be BETTER than self funding.

Going into debt is ridiculous. If you can't pay your bills, got get a job and some financial stability.

Mike Filsaime was sales manager for the nation's largest Toyota dealership. And he drove 2 hours to work and 2 hours home EVERY day.

And he STILL put in an hour or two every day to start his IM business.

I'm NOT saying it's easy.

I'm saying it CAN be done and has been done.

There ARE no excuses for not having and selling your own products online.

Now, I'm all for selling affiliate products. And I realize you see screen caps every day from people who throw out massive numbers saying they do it by selling affiliate products alone.

And I believe they are telling the truth....sort of.

I DOUBT they're telling you what it REALLY takes for them to have those sales.

But let's say they are.

I'm STILL going to contend the BEST way to build your list is by selling your own product. And it's the best way to sell affiliate products.

To start with, selling affiliate products IS a good way to get started. But really, it shouldn't be but a few months before you have at least one product of your own.

Now, there are others out there saying you don't need to build a list.

Listen to them if you want. But first ask yourself some questions:


1. Has their method been working since 1998 and before?

2. Will their method be working 1 year from now?

3. What happens when a lot of people start using their method?


Of course, they're only selling it to 500 people. But listen, word travels fast in this business.

You can listen to whoever you want to listen to and follow whatever model you want. That's your choice.

Are the web 2.0 methods evergreen?

I like some of them. But will Twitter and Facebook BE here 5 years from now? I think web 2.0 is cool stuff and IS part of a sound marketing arsenal.

Use them but don't bet the farm on them.

A lot of people want GIMMICKS instead of basic, sound, "old school" marketing.

1. You find your target buyers

2. Put together an attractive report or video they WANT and will subscribe to get.

3. Send follow up emails

4. Get your own product as soon as you can

5. Start using multi-media to sell and promote


Blog posts, video, podcast audio, even postcards and direct mail. Not to mention webinars and teleseminars.

You can specialize in one of these or slowly roll out the full arsenal.

Creating audio and video is EASY and fun now.

It used to be difficult. But it's stupid easy now, once you know the tricks.

SEO Vs SEM - What's The Difference?

If you've overheard people debating about SEO vs SEM, you can safely come to a very logical conclusion. These people don't really know what SEO or SEM is. They are not alone- many people are clearing the dark about the differences between the two terms. The fact is that SEO and SEM have a lot more in common than most people realize. To make the most out of website optimization, you need to use both these aspects, not just one.

Back To Basics

The first step in clearing the air about SEO vs SEM is to understand what these abbreviations mean. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization while SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. So aren't these two different things? Not really and this is exactly where most people make their mistake. SEM consists of different methods and strategies for promoting and advertising a website. In other words, SEO is a part of SEM- in fact, it's probably one of the most important SEM methods used these days.

By now, it's probably clear why the SEO vs SEM argument is a little silly. It's a bit like saying which is better, the thumb or the hand? You need to have both components working together to have a successful online business. But let's go a little deeper into the issue to get a better understanding of where SEO and SEM differ.

SEO And SEM

SEO basically refers to the tools and tactics that are used to optimize a website. The majority of these tools are focused on keywords and how to design the website in such a way so that it's picked up quickly by the search engines. This includes making sure that the web pages are keyword enriched and placing the keywords in the title and domain name of the website. Alt tags are also used in the naming of images on the website.

Unlike SEO, SEM focuses on other ways to market the site as a whole- in other words, it looks at ways other than the search engines to get your website noticed. This includes submitting articles to directories and magazines as well as joining different communities and forums. Video marketing via sites like YouTube is also an important marketing method. Using Pay Per Click ads is another very popular SEM strategy.

Rather than debate about SEO vs SEM, the question should be whether you can have one without the other. Technically yes, but your overall business strategy will be one-sided as a result. Focusing simply on the search engines and keyword enrichment only reaches a portion of your potential market. Similarly, if you bank only on articles, social networking and Pay Per Click, you will not be exploiting your full market reach. A well-rounded business plan needs to have both SEO and SEM- instead of looking at SEO vs SEM, you should be looking at how they can work together to make your online business better.
